Desi's Grandpa Pehrson, died on August 21, 2012. The family, Mordecai, Desi, Ruby, Mike, and Emily drove from Colorado on Friday, August 24th. Mike had worked very late the night before and had to go into work that morning to make final arrangements so the family arrived late in the evening, for the funeral on Saturday, August 25, 2012, in Murray, Utah.

Joseph and Barbara Pehrson lived most of their lives in Murray but spent time in Germany during the same time period as John and I were there. We were in the Serviceman's Kaiserslautern Stake together and always enjoyed that bond. Barbara has been gone for eight years. They had one daughter, Karen, and five sons--all with large families.
Grandpa Pehrson was bishop four times, was the Branch President in Augsburg, Germany and served in the Branch Presidency at St. Joseph's Villa Convalescent Center. While he was bishop, this meetinghouse where the funeral was held, was built. He was a member of the Millcreek Stake Second Ward.
The Eliasons came to the viewing so they would have an opportunity to visit with Mike and Desi. Grant in the orange shirt, Kristilyn holding Lillian, Mark holding Amelia, and James in the red shirt.
Desi is expecting another beautiful baby girl in November.
The funeral was tender and well done. Mike played for the women to sing "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief." The opening song was "Come, Come Ye Saints." When Grandpa Pehrson was serving in the Korean War he didn't know how to find other members of the Church. When he saw a man who he thought might me a member, he whistled "Come, Come Ye Saints." The man whistled "We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet" in response and they were very happy to be in contact.
All six of Joe and Barbara's family were represented at the funeral. Derk asked Karen to extemporaneously share her testimony at the funeral which she did, again reminding the family of Grandpa Pehrson's testimony and desire for the family to keep the commandments so they could be together forever. Military honors were respectfully done by young military men. Taps was beautifully played then the flag folded and presented to Karen Bainbridge, the only daughter. I'm glad they didn't shoot the guns.
They had a luncheon at the church afterward then the Bainbridge (Desi's branch) family went to Grandpa's house for the afternoon. In the evening, the extended Pehrson family had a barbecue with a water slide for a family gathering inasmuch as many family members had traveled so far.
Emily started First grade this week.
Mordecai
Ruby is just eighteen months old.
Emily, Mordecai, and Ruby were incredibly good during the funeral. Ruby took a long nap and the older children have been well taught how to behave in a church meeting. It did get long for Mordecai when he commented afterwards, "I don't want to go to a church where you eat afterwards again because it was too long!"
Saturday night, after Mike and Desi, put the children to bed at our home in West Jordan, Desi started having a lot of pain. Mike took her to the Emergency Room of the big new IHC Hospital in Murray, Utah at 11:30 PM. She had kidney stones, including a very large one on each side. Mike stayed with Desi through the night where she was heavily medicated with the hope that she could pass the stones. She did pass several small stones on Sunday and the pain went away by evening but she still has the two large ones. She was released from the hospital on Sunday evening and she will determine with her urologist in Denver how to handle the stones at home with surgery or other means because of her pregnancy. Mike took the children to our ward with us. Desi's parents from Tennessee stayed with her, then her brother Joey from Ohio, her sister Wanda from Wisconsin, and Felicia and Tom, the newly-weds, came to keep her company during the day.
Sunday evening, Keith and Kim and their family, and Julie and Jason came to see Mike and Desi because a visit is a treasured occasion since they live so far away. (Desi in pink, Mike, Keith, Kim, John holding Ruby, Julie, Jason playing with Mordecai.) Karen and Rich Bainbridge, Desi's parents, also came to visit. .

The grandchildren are so excited to see Jason and Julie because they love to play with him. They still vividly remember playing "You can't come into my house" from our reunion in June.
Mike and Keith
Mike had terrible allergies but was very happy to be home in West Jordan for the first time in two years.
Precious little Ruby in the playroom. She and Emily love lettuce and before I had finished making spaghetti for dinner, they had eaten a third of the lettuce from the salad. Great food choices!
After a good night's rest, Mike and Desi and their family left for Colorado Monday morning. Desi's sister Wanda went with them. If Desi has surgery this week, Wanda will be there to help. Wanda will then fly home to Wisconsin. Desi's parents are driving home after they get some things settled with the estate. Though there were many challenges during the weekend, there were many tender mercies and blessings. We are grateful for the gospel and the peace that it gives us and the wonderful family love and support that we feel. .
