Our motor coach took us from Boston up through the forests of Vermont to Sharon, the birthplace of the Prophet Joseph Smith. The forests just go on forever. It seems like they are growing almost on a bare granite base. There was very little farming and the towns were few and far between. It was a beautiful area but it would have been very difficult to make a living there or even provide for a family. The phrase "clearing the land for crops" is far more meaningful after seeing the dense forests of the Northeast.

The 39 1/2 foot solid granite shaft marking the birthplace is one of the largest in the world. Miraculously the ground froze when they were getting it to the site so that it could be transported in 1905 for the centennial.
After extensive archeological research the actual site of the house has been found. The doorstep remains.
This is a panorama of the area. The missionaries live in the building to the left and the visitor's center is the building to the right. This was the one time of Joseph's life that he wasn't persecuted and hunted. The surgery on his leg when he was seven years old was in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
